We asked them about keeping a house cat, and we received a pretty curt response (email) basically telling us that cats need freedom and should not be kept inside unless they had a disability or condition which meant they needed an indoor lifestyle.

That's so strange. Around here, your adoption application at a shelter is likely be refused if you say you are going to let the cat go outside.

I couldn't bear the stress of not knowing where my cats are, I need to know they are safe and happy every minute of the day, inside.

When I took in a stray a couple years ago I had a few people give me these dire warnings that because she was used to being "free" she would not adapt to being a house cat. On the contrary, she showed no interest or desire to step out the door at all. Even when I took the others (harness trained) out into our little fenced yard, she did not, at first, have any interest in it.

She is now harness trained and comes out with the rest now (never unsupervised) but it took her a long time to trust it. And she shows no desire to go beyond the boundaries of the fence, and always comes in when I say it's time.
