Cats and Bathing

My long haired cat tok a swim yesterday in the full up wheelbarrow in the garden - Quite deliberate it would seem, he was happily splashing around scooping out the dead leaves with his paws (he was up to his shoulder depth). I've never actually tried washing him as such as I just assumed that because I didn't introduce it as a small kitten he would object and hence just comb reguarly and try and get the "pats" off his bum as best I can . So now I'm thinking it may be worth a go! Can anyone give me some advice as the best way to go ahead? Do you use animal shampoo or just water? In the bath or large bucket? Any ideas greatly appreciated
