best way to tell is when they reach maturity (for standard goldfish, around 10-12", fancies, 6-8"). at this stage, the males develop speckles on their gill flaps, that many mistake for white spot. the females also look rounder and plumper as they become full of eggs. other than this, there is no real sure fire way of telling im afraid
