We do have a crate, but it's up to her if she goes in it. We (will eventually, once it arrives) have a stair gate to keep her in the kitchen (where the crate is) and the utility if we pop out, but currently she has the run of downstairs and she sleeps in a (ooh the shame) green Tesco delivery box with blankets in in our bedroom. Whether we'll increase the use of the crate remains to be seen, as she's only been here less than 24 hours. At the moment I want her to get used to our home and us.
And I'm not overly fussed about wees/poops on the floor, I've toilet trained three children and there are always accidents, it's what floor cleaner and elbow grease if for!
