I think we definitely will get another cat - he was such a lovely little pet, so loving and entertaining. Great at catching spiders and flies too!
I just wish we had made him come in last night, but then hindsight is a great thing. I'm not sure whether he was hit by a car or whether he may have fallen off the roof as he was right at the side of the house - it's possible he climbed the tree and chased a squirrel or bird or something and fell. The vet couldn't be certain - she thought fall or car. There wasn't much to be seen externally except that his claws were all scuffed where he'd tried to grab onto something, he had massive internal injuries though so even if we'd found him straight away she doubted he would have survived.
It's such a shame because he's only recently started getting adventurous, until a few weeks ago he wouldn't venture very far at all and didn't go out all that much, but he'd started to get braver - we caught him playing with a frog the other day! I half wish we'd kept him as an indoor cat, but then he did enjoy going out and we live in a cul-de-sac so I thought he'd be reasonably safe - there's lots of cats about who seem to roam about without any trouble.
I did everything to make his life happy - fed him decent food, got him all his jabs, flea/worm treatments, got him castrated like a responsible owner, made sure he was well-looked after. It's so annoying them my brother-in-law's girlfriend who has his sister has never looked after her properly at all, but nothing has happened to her (except she is now pregnant - we may end up taking on one or 2 of her kittens if they are born safely and healthily).
If I get another cat I am really going to insist it stays in at night!
