Without the fishkeeping hobby many species of fish would be extinct, due to habitat loss from industries such as tourism and illegal logging.

So long as the fish are kept in an adequately-sized aquarium with a cycled filter and suitable water conditions then they can thrive just as well as they would in the wild.
