its a spine defect. ive seen it many times in the trade, usually in small tetras and danios, but occasionally livebearers as well. my theory is that in todays age, where aquarium fish are bred en-mass to cope with the global demand, the runts and deformed young that are usually killed off, are sometimes missed, and find their way into the trade.
