When tropical species or even not tropical but simply wild species become or are used as pets wildlife is depleted and their habiotats is destructed.
More often wildlife trade as pets is linked to habitat destruction and having these animals as pets could mean supporting animal experiments:

even chamaleons become a source for some kind of objectionable activities.
What's the aim of this study,producing an eye drop for captive reptiles ?(this then would lead to the vet bills thread if it exists). Is chamaleon a business?Does anybody care for them really?

I support the conservation of chamaleons habitat like every wild life.
