I wouldn't bother using the newspaper. You'll have to retrain them off the newspaper to go outside.
Take him out every 20 minutes or so, especially after play, food, or sleep. Keep any eye out for any sniffing because that's usually a sign that they're looking for a place to go.
Take him out before you go to bed/work and if you can take him out sometime during the night. Also take him out first thing in the morning.
Patience is all you need. It won't take that long to housetrain but it will feel like forever.
Oh, and don't talk to him when you take him out at night and if he does his business outside praise him quietly. Also don't give him a row if he messes in the house. Pick him up and put him outside without a word.
