Mai Tai goes out on her harness - we have an extending lead for her too - it's a pretty pink one  . I don't worry about anyone thinks - she is safe that's all that matters 
Good luck with Jinxy - it's best if you put the harness on him round the house for a bit first to get him used to it and when out walking you have to go where he wants - cats don't usually want to go walking like dogs
