Sounds like you are doing the right things. You can usually expect 2-4 weeks of drama before you know if they will get along!
A varient is just a cat who deviates from their breed standard, so Im assuming Ruby is hairy??!! I have a slightly mental cornish rex variant(long wavy fur) plus 2 more CR varients with short straight fur. They are just as cute as the proper ones!!
