Give him a chance!
Firstly I think you should cut down on the checks. He obviously wont be able to settle and sleep if you disturbing him all the time.
You should ignore any whinning if you can or he will learn that this makes you come running. If he does carry on though you can try a number of things to help settle him.
I would give him a dog chew to keep him occupied. You could also leave a dim nightlight on for him or even a radio.
Give him a chance to settle in though before you decide what is a problem but in all honesty it sounds perfectly normal and I cant see the problem. ?!
