It's fine don't worry, I know what you mean, people do it differently depending on their own cats. A friend of mine does her's every day as she only puts a small amount of litter in, I think really its down to you as to whether you think it's clean enough, pussy cat will also tell you if its not happy and thinks its dirty as it'll do it outside the tray lol I have a hooded tray as Timmy tends to kick it about a bit and it tends to come out the tray as he can't aim to well (his balance isn't too great, he's still getting used to having a rear leg removed) and he gets frustrated if he can't cover it so he's better off having it deep However with a kitten you will probably need a lot less in the tray at first, but need to change it more regularly although having never had kittens I'm not sure how often they "go" lol
