Aye, they have always been Hybrids. As the wikipedia link states, most people believe that the Parrot cichlid is a hybrid between the Midas cichlid (Amphilophus citrinellus) and the Redhead cichlid (Cichlasoma synspilum). However I think that it looks more like a hybrid between the Midas and the Severum cichlid (Heros severus).
