Saikou is correct - herpes is for life (although around 45% of infected cats never shed the virus again after their initial infection) and calici can be eliminated by the majority of cats - although they can be reinfected at a later date. A minority do become lifelong carriers, but they're not necessarily going to infect every other cat they come in contact with.
