I think your boy is a little bit comfused. Try to remove all the wee/poo smell, they'll remeber and find the place they marked before, some white vinegar with soap water would help a lot.
take him to his tray if he's doing something like walking backward, or digging with his front legs, take him to his tray first thing in the morning, or after his meal. this is how I litter train my cat, hope you find them useful
