When docking was legal, some vets where unsure of the length of tail to leave on certain breeds hence a few breeders I know of docked themselves They would either use elastic bands or clip off with miller forge type clipper (used for clipping pet nails and beaks) which crush rather than slice so as to seal the stump and minimise bleeding.
Sorry but I am soo glad that docking is now done a lot less!
