have you tried local rescues? that way the kitten comes complete with jabs and neutered, or with a voucher, health checked and as an added bonus your son gets the bonus of 'saving' his cat.

Just a note though, with the £30 left over you mentioned for buying the kitten, I assume other costs (all the kit, vaccinations, food, neutering etc) are all within the normal household budget?
