I've used the wood shavings on all 20 of my gerbils for roughly 2 years and i've never had any problems with respiratory infections
I do like carefresh but with 20 gerbils, it would work out far too expensive to buy all of the time.
It's more or less whatever you and your gerbils feel comfortable with
