I have two male rats, and they are the best pets I have ever had. One is really hyper and runs all the over the place, (so believe me they aren't all lazy), and my other rat is really quiet outside the cage but happily will sit still on you, and grinding his teeth happily. They don't smell, just make sure you clean them out quite regularly and you will be fine!
