these mats are made so the litter drops (is rubbed) off the cats feet and into grooves - newspaper wouldn't do that. Also a door mat is hard to clean, with these I just pick it up and shake it into the bin and it is plastic so completely washable and dries really quickly if any poop gets on it - I wouldn't be able to do that with a cheap door mat. I do understand that it seems expensive - but with the litter we use (wood pellets) I was fed up of standing on hard pellets in bare feet (ouch ) since we got the tracker mat I've not stood on one once.
