I have a dog of 10 mnths who drinks excessively and urinates a lot and he has got kidney failure in the early stages! Luckily I took him to the vets to get it checked out. His urine litmuss paper test showed normal but his blood test showed elevated levels.

There is a possibility it could be something simple such as a bad habit but it is always wise to get a dog checked out that drinks excessively, other symptoms or not. If I had ignored my dogs symptoms I would have carried on feeding him as normal but now he is on a special diet to help reduce the load on his kidneys because his condition would have got worse a lot quicker if I hadnt!

I have a friend whos dog was drinking excessivley, she took it to the vets and it was diagnosed with kidney problems, for one reason or another she actually had to limit its fluid intake. If your worried or its only just started to happen go to the vets and they should clear it up for you

I dont understand why your friends dog would say this unless they were withholding water to test for a certain disease of which the name I cant remember?
A dog with kidney problems should NEVER be restricted from water as this can be very detrimental in worsening the kidneys function. When a dog drinks excessively because of kidney problems it is because the kidneys are not flushing out the toxins efficiently enough so the brain sends a message from the kidneys to drink more water to compensate. That is why they obviously pee more and its very dilute.

It might be nothing to worry about or something as simple as diabetes but if it were me I would definitely go to the vet if it seems unusual just to be on the safe side.
