My Patterdale is 14yrs and still cries at night to get some company, I have just recently let her sleep at the side of my bed so I can get a descent nights sleep.
I would suggest changing your routine on the nights that you are off, maybe letting him out later than his usual time, wake him up if he sleeps in the evening before bed time. Good Luck!
