Re: german wire haired pointer pups

Are you a member of the German wirehaired pointer club? They have a puppy list on their web site via which you can advertise your litter if you are a member. There is definately not a test for epilepsy yet. No gwp should be bred from if it hasn't been tested for VWd. It is not a problem as much as it used to be, as because there is a test for it, infected dogs/carriers have been weeded out. On a recent health survey h/d was still mentioned by the kennel club as a big factor in poor health of gwp's, when infact the breed mean score comes in at around 13. The biggest problems facing the breed which are on the increase are epilepsy and skin problems. There is a solid liver stud dog being used at the moment which does produce epileptic offspring. The owner knows this and still allows him to be used. As we cannot be certain of the carrier lines, ie which dogs to avoid in the pedigree of the bitch , it is sad this is the case.
