Didn't you read about the terrible problems with certain dried foods last year? Plenty of cats and dogs died, although fortunately not in the UK. The foods were contaminated with melamine from China, which was added illegally in an attempt to boost the protein content - due to a loophole in the method of testing for protein, the tampering wasn't noticed until it was too late
There have also been cat deaths in Australia due to contamination of another dried food (not Orijen) - I personally know a breeder who suffered badly because of this. Then there is the problem of contamination of a well known brand of dried food with aflotoxin - this has happened in Europe and many breeders have suffered.
So the Orijen scare is by no means an isolated case.
Despite this I think that the new Applaws dried food is a huge improvement on what is already available and I shall be using it, but only as a very minor contribution to my cats' diet. Dried food is still dried food, with a very low moisture content and inappropriately high carbohydrate content, (I think Applaws is 15% carb, without going to check on the pack!) making it unsuitable as a sole diet for a carnivore such as the cat

I have a 15 year old moggy who has had a main dry diet all her life - I think shes been to the vet due to illness maybe twice in her life, she is still going strong - so dry food cant be all that bad.
As for MPM's offer to those of you who would be financially out of pocket by throwing away unopened bags of Orijen - Marketing or not - if it saves you a few £££'s - why not? Its not naughty - its a company running a business whose customers are cat lovers.
I hope MPM doesnt see the negative attitude on this thread and next time they can step in and help cat owners and breeders, they dont bother for fear of being judged.
