Re: Raw Diet

Caritay

I have a ten yr greyhound and i had that for a couple of days. Over two weeks i took her off kibble and onto what i call a raw meat diet. Like what you have described; fresh meat with a little veg and mixer. I actually gave her tinned meat or fish and mixer. When i changed the mixer to a plain biscuit i had softer verging on runny stools. Clearly the biscuit was not right for her but the mixer was fine. Basically the biscuit was passing through her too quickly. Chopped veg must be as fine as possible; prepared using a Hachoir, food processor or knife if you can chop v.finely - too large and it'll go straight through. I feed twice a day... three smaller meals when switching over initally - easier on their digestion.

If your dog has been on kibble then i reckon a 1.5 - 2 week changeover. Some kibble does contain substance that induces almost an addiction to it and dogs can suffer a little until it is out of the system. That may be the case with your dog particularly if they have been fed the same food for several years.

I'd recommend you try some Chappie, white fish or tinned pilchards and see how that settles. Fish is easily digestible and dogs love it. [I weighed the dogs last week and when i called into the vets i noticed a whole load of Chappie on the shelves and less of the complete feed sacks. I asked the receptionist why they seemed to be changing to tinned food - apparently customers had been asking for Chappie.] Maybe some cooked rice as well to remove any possibility of biscuit allergy. My parents had a dog that suffered from that and eat raw meat/fish with cooked rice , a little raw veg, [and a vitamin additive] all his life. The biscuit allergy disappeared with age.

RAW DIET - WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU MEAN? Raw Meat Bone [RMB] or BARF as some people call it is exactly that. Meaty bones where your dog chews off the meat and crunches some of the bone.

I feed raw diet - fresh meat/fish with a mix of veg and mixer. Some folk say veg isn't required but it does add to their diet. Quantity is important a dog should have 2-3 % of their body weight.

My quantity guidline per day per dog
2 parts meat : 1 part veg-mix [veg-mixer being in equal proportions]

Veg - green mostly and some carrot and swede/turnip. Fruit some of the time but never pips (poison for dogs but occasional one isn't going to do any harm). Mixer a good quality one like pedigree or Tesco's premium. I mix the meat and veg together by hand and then put the mixer at the side of the bowl [dry to help clean off the teeth - mixed in with the meat stops this].

my lurcher weighs 18 kg. 2 % gives 0.36 kg meat [13oz], 0.09 veg [3oz], 0.09 mixer [3oz]. I do add a vitamin additive tablet and garlic tablet. I used to give evening primrose oil for the coat but use a higher quality mixer now which has a higher oil content.

Obviously this depends on age and exercise etc. I call that the base diet and they get chicken wings some days and a marrow bone. I always weigh food to monitor their weight.
