I have owned both and I have found that mice smell worse than rats, I found that male rats smelled worse than my females but the cage was cleaned properly once a week with a very strong but non deadly cleaner and It stopped the smell, also i wouldn't recommend having wood in their cage as the urine soaks in an makes the smell worse.
I miss my rats  xx
