I have seen references to this as well, I will try and find one of the links.
The dry food myth and teeth seem to be around as they bite into a hard biscuit the action removes plaque from. Invariably biscuits make a reappearance at some point, and you can see that most of them seem to have been swallowed whole, so that doesn't really apply.
Cheap wet foods do contain sugars, but if you are careful about the ones you choose, then that shouldn't be a problem.
