I usually buy the hard plastic virtually indestructable dog beds and put a blanket in.

For my dog Duke I bought a petmate bed from Pets at Home. Its a large square, metal frame with legs, the material is strong canvas with a padded base. I put blankets in it at first, then an old quilt and now he has a fluffy dog pad in it.
