To BARF or not to BARF?

I have been giving my dogs IAMS dry kibble but I am beginning to feel guilty because they eat the same thing day after day. I had my older dog on a BARF diet for a few months and he loved it of course but I got away from it because at the time I was traveling quite a bit and couldnt find the time to make his food.
I would like to add some variety to their diet and was considering going back to the BARF diet or some variation thereof and maybe mixing it with their regular food but I am not sure about it. Mainly because I dont want to make a sudden change in their diet especially for my older dog (13 years) and cause intestinal problems of any kind.
Does anyone have any recommendations for switching to this type of diet and if it would, or would not be a good idea for an older dog?
