This happened when one of our two dogs was put to sleep. We were so wrapped up in our own grief, that we did not notice Luke pining.
I would suggest that you get another cat, preferably a younger one, for companionship. Sorry, to hear of your loss.

I feel so sad reading this post because when we lost our cat after 9 years I was so devastated, although his sister (litter mate) looked confused she did not look like she was pining and my husband explained to her and let her have a sniff at him in the hope she would understand what had happened - it was very sudden - he was hit by a car
It is only recently I realise that like me she still misses him sometimes she comes over for a hug and if I mention him she gives a look and I'm sure it's exactly what she was thinking. We got a new cat but they are pretty indifferent - funnily enough she seems really calm with oure new cat having a litter.
Hope all goes well with you and your cat and definitely get another even if they don't get on perfectly you will still have given a cat a home and I think having other cats around is more healthy for them.
