Thumbs up Re: Do You Think There Is Need For 'New' Breeds?

[quote=Debbie;150718]No breed of dog is perfect so why go on to cross 2 breeds to create another that will have the bad points of both breeds?
What may suit one person may not suit another - The perfect breed for me is far from the perfect breed for anyone else - But there are plenty of well established breeds for people to chose from - yes you can cross 2 breeds or create a new one but it will take many years before a breed standard will be acheived - what is missing from the already huge list of breeds???? I dont think there is anything missing, there are plenty of breeds available to suit any life style these days - all these breeds have history and not many are still being used for the original purpose but fit very well into todays life style

Good points / bad points- that is the art of breeding. Not my field of expertise I am afraid.
Your point about there being many breeds already is perfectly true and I am sure that there is a horse for every course. What is also undeniable however is that there is a demand for more choice fueled by (mainly) the media exposure of some of these "new breeds". This cross-breeding has already got widespread recognition in the US and will undoubtedly get here in due course - all the American ideas do, for good or ill. There are several hybrid dog websites available on the internet.
Breed standard means little to the vast majority of dog buyers who are after a healthy family pet of the right size, temprement and price. They have no intention of showing their pet, it's for the kids to play with and to take for a walk to the park. This is what dogs are for (my opinion). They are a family extension.
Breed Standard is a subjective measure anyway. My dogs better than yours no matter what so-and-so says!
Back to the initial question - there is a place for new breeds because to stop their development is both un-natural and impossible. All you could do is refuse to recognise them in the Kennel Club or such like and thus have less influence over their development.
