Umm, I hate to tell you Clare, but sticking with well known big companies isnt that safe either, some of the biggest petfood companies were found to have included melamine in their foods a couple of years ago...Melamine Pet Food Recall of 2007 Menu Foods supplied many of the larger brand makers, including Iams, Eukanuba etc.
