I would get an indoor lead, I have one as my dog got very barky and wouldn't settle till the vistor was sitting down (and had been for a while)

That way tyou have more control over the dog, you can get them at most good pet shops and/or training centres

You could also try DAP spray and just use it when there are vistors.

My dogs learnt now that when we have visiters that usally means tea and cake (hence a dog biscuit for him!) so he's learn't that if he dosesn't settle he has to go into the other room and then he can't have his biscuit
