Gun Dog Training

Hi

I've just registered so hello!!!! **waves**. We have an 11 month old yellow rescue lab who got too boisterous for his former owners (had him for 7 weeks). Unfortunately, my old hero of a hound, lab x huntaway was put to sleep within 2 weeks of the pup arriving due to a deterioration from kidney failure. The old dog was highly obedient and one of those superhounds you never forget The aim was for him to be around a lot longer to help teach the youngster how to behave (I have a horse, so wanted to get the training pushed along so I could take the babba out with me after a few months).

As it stands, the youngster was quite badly behaved. Seemed to love running away from humans with their prized possessions in his mouth. We've just about stopped this by positive reinforcement and not chasing him, so it's all very lacklustre if he does it now. He now sits, waits for food until 'release', leaves treats until told, walks to heel and his tour de force is finding a stick I've touched but he can't see where I've thrown it, BUT has the puppy willfullness of lalalalalalala not listening when out in the field. He's run after some cyclists a jogger, other dogs and I fear one day it will be horses... so his mind needs to be focussed.

After a local trainer heard about his pros and cons she advised junior gun dog class. We start next week

Can anyone please tell me what we should expect in these classes?? I have no idea and can't find info anywhere on the web!!

Many thanks!!!!
