just to let you know my family have kept a couple of cairn terriers in the past - obivisouly a smaller breed dog - and both of them were ok when left in the house on their own (im not saying all will be - it depends on how they are brought up) - but they might be a breed to consider as they are generally hardy little dogs - and as for running my dad takes his current one on hikes through big hills and mountains - shes certainly an athletic little dog - they are very friendly and have great temperaments ( again the ones we've kept )
hope you find a suitable breed - susie and the gang

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the helpfull comments!
The search continues, one breed that keeps coming up is the Cocker Spaniel? What do people think about this?
Also... to my surprise some large breeds have come up for example mastiffs. Is this realistic? Apparently they have a relatively low exercise drive? Do any knowledgeable members have a view on this?
