I think seperation anxiety can be a problem with all dog breeds depending on the dogs personality. The way you behave towards the dog from day one is also going to make a difference.
A dog is a mans best friend and they don't like being left all day on their own, most love attention.
Most common small breeds should be ok for you. We all have to live in the real world, which means if care is taken you should still be able to work and have a happy dog.
