All of mine have been rehomed with me and were used to going outside before that, they love being outside. In the summer its great to see them asleep in their favourite place in the sun and playing in the snow in winter. Yes there are risks but so is everything in life.
I think it depends on where you live, traffic, people and then make a decision.

Traffic is never that far away, neither are thiefs.............only one thing to say on this subject, if you have got a valuable cat, take it out on a leash or KEEP IT INSIDE!!!!!!!!!! unless you want one squashed kitty, stolen kitty, flea ridden kitty, fox eaten kitty, savage dog mauled kitty,.............need I say anymore
