I own a breeding pair of Beagles. The bitch is unreliable in her seasons, and finally after one successful mating and 5 beautiful puppies after a c-section (due to their size) aged 3, her next breedable season resulted in a phantom pregnancy. Her seasons are often irregular, and result in her messing in the house and becoming depressed, so I had decided to have her spayed - possibly after one last attempt at another litter. Selfish, I know, but my vet said she was healthy and I did buy her as an investment as well as a pet. Just 2 months after when her phantom puppies would have been born, the dog is going wild for her. Though she is swollen and red, there is no blood as there usually is. We decided to give the dog the benefit of the doubt, and the experienced breeder I bought both the dog and bitch from, advised me to try mating. First problem, bitch seemed agressive towards the dog, which has never happened before on any of their matings, successful or not. Second problem, the dog withdrew as soon as his penis became engorged, on two consecutive matings. We finally got a good tie this evening, which lasted just over 10 minutes. When the dog pulled out, a lot of blood came out of the bitch. Has he induced her into a bleeding season? I am concerned about possible uterine disease/damage, especially as the season is too soon, and I am worried about damage that may have been caused by her c-section. I will ring my breeder and vet tomorrow, but am just wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

Also, what are people's opinions concerning spaying at the same time as a c-section? My vet asked me if I wanted to spay my bitch when she had the c-section, but I said no, as it was her first litter and it appeared the main reason for her requiring the c-section was one massive puppy blocking the way out. However, he has since told me that she will require a c-section again, and when she was having her phantom pregnancy (she was mated twice successfully, so I did actually believe she was pregnant) he wanted me to book an elective c-section for her. He then said he wouldn't recommend spaying her at the same time, and that she would have to go back for the spaying operation 3 months or so after her c-section. Are they just trying to get extra money out of me, or are they working for my dogs best interest?
