My cat used to have mucusy blood in her stools which was due to a small fissure in the bowel. Does your cat usually have constipation or the runs? If he's been straining due to constipation he could have torn a little bit of skin around his bum.

You could always ring your vet for advice. Maybe have a feel of his tummy to see if he's got a lot of 'matter' in his bowel.
