I leave cheaters ears to my groomer too I just trim them up as I can no longer afford to send him every 8 weeks. He let's me use the clippers on him justto keep him tidy. I biased too and think a mini schnauzer would be good for your mum.
Let's us know how you get on. Maybe an older less active rescue might suit her. Just a thought!
