Absolutely cats like having other cats around - well some more than others - not sure where the bit about them being fiercely independent came from actually, I know some cats deal fine with being on their own - but I know mine absolutely love each other!
My friends have Bubbles, a 5 year old pretty dominant large white Persian x Ginger neutered tom (gorgeous, literally a mix of the two) and 4 months ago they got our kittens' litter sister. His nose was put a little out of joint at first but now he adores his lil friend. He gently cuffs her and plays with her, is quite protective over her and its charming to see, especially with their size difference. I would think if your cat's a dominant male and as he's not a "teen" any more that a female would be preferable - wouldn't you? Also girls know how to claim their space and knowing little queens I bet she's more evil to him at first Good luck, I hope you do get her x
