I think its whatever works for you and for the new kitten... i have had to try several different types of food as one of our kittens has an intolerance to grain/rice/cereals that you find in some foods. We're currently on Hills ID pouches but moving them onto Bozita wet cartons (which are fab - 93% meat content and v economical on cost) and applaws dry 80% chicken content with no cereal in it etc. But have had to get them off whiska's (which is what they were on when we got them and am convinced has caused the tummy probs) and they didnt settle well on Hi-life (very stinky poop!) and also Hills dry was no good either! But i think every cat is different?? I have heard lots and lots of good things about Orijen and applaws cans.
