my cats 21 years old now and when she was younger (about 5 years old) we put a collar on her and it seemed to irritate her skin so we removed it and all the fur had come off around her neck and even now at 21 shes got a bald ring around her neck. although its no where near as obvious as it was, it looks more like a scar now!! and the collar wasnt too tight either! i personally would never put a collar on a cat but get it microchipped instead
also it can be dangerous with them jumping up on things and the collar could get caught
