Re: Cystitis & use of water fountains
If you look on Best Pet Pharmacy, they do several things you can give long term in the form of supplements, or palatable pastes that contain things to prevent UTIs and stones etc. They aren't that expensive.
Even though he only has one meal of dry a day, its probably better to either reduce the amount or cut it out altogether, just incase. You could try him on chunks of raw meat or a raw chicken drumstick to gnaw on overnight, if he will eat them. The amount of water they have to drink to compensate for even a small bowl of dry is more than a cat would think to drink, even with a water fountain, its quite surprising. Any thing you can do to keep him "flushed" through will help.
Another quick thought, if he does have to stay on a diet formula, try the RC version of the urinary diet. That is highly palatable. I had that for one of mine once, and I had to fight the others off it, just bring it into the room aroused attention so it obviously smells good to a cat.
