They always say that dogs live in the moment, so smacking them would only make them think that whatever they were doing at that point in time was wrong, not the past event. As for rubbing their face in it ewwww I can't see what that teaches tbh. think training has come a long way since these methods but it's not widely publicised yet which is unfortunate.
