Best thing I've bought was a puppy pen. Can't recommend it enough. We have it as a permanent fixture in our living room and will keep it until she is old enough to be trustworthy. She is very happy to stay in there while we get on with stuff, even out of sight upstairs. Took some gradual separation training, but it was worth it.

This is in addition to her crate where she sleeps at night.
