Cats just react instinctively to things, its not that he's being deliberately naughty. I think if you were to give him some safe outdoor space, such as a cat run you would find a lot of difference in his behaviour.
I have two cats who I don't let wander but they have a big shed and outdoor run they go in, summer and winter.
Though you don't see them being that active [in comparison with sounding like a pair of stampeeding Buffalo in the house] they really enjoy going out there. In fact they wait at the door in the morning to be taken up there.
They watch the birds in the garden, the odd squirrell and my young chicks roaming the garden.
When they come in at night it takes the edge off their energy levels and settle so much better. Imagine if you never went outside the house, how would you feel?
