I need some advice.

We got a puppy just before Christmas and he is now 6 months old. He is a great dog fantastic with the kids and very affectionate. The problem is he isnt house trained at all.

First off it's our own fault. We were inconsistant with his training and did things wrong (like punishing him after the event). We did seem to be getting somewhere about 3 months ago but then it stopped (again our won fault) and now he just goes anywhere (usually hidden).

My question is this, if we start again will it work or are the bad habits formed now and wont be unmade?

Although I did read up on house training when we first got him I obviously didn't do enough research and now have learned so much more.

I have some time off in a couple of weeks (I work part time) and our plan is to get him spayed and then start hourse training afresh. Using a different "key" word (as he now associates the old one with being punished) and getting him into a better routine.

Do you think this will work?

Any advice would be great.
