We have had a cat who had asthma. He too had those coughing episodes. Our vet gave us corticosteroids for him. In the beginning we had to give him that every day, but when the coughing stopped, we could start giving him less. They now also have an inhaler for cats, the Aerokat. This is ofcourse better, because there will be much less side effects.
Ringo was a very healthy, happy and active cat and most days you didn't even notice he had asthma. There were some things I had to think of, like not burning incense and keeping the house nice and dust free.
I think a cat can have allergies, but I don't know much about that.
